桂剥きの要領で薄板にしたブナ材をテープ状にカットし、それをコイルの様に巻いたものを立体にして商品へと成形させる。これがブナコの技術です。もともとは津軽塗の素地として開発されましたが、年輪を思わせる様な模様は独特で美しく、いつしか塗りつぶすよりは木地そのものを見せる商品が主流となりました。こんな話を聞いたことがあります。それまで輸送用の林檎箱として使用されていたブナの木が、食卓の上で林檎を入れるフルーツボウルへと出世した。ブナコという技術が開発されたことで、ブナに新たな魅力が生まれたというのです。曲木や寄木など 木材を材料にした技術は日本にも多くあり、どの技術も限られた材料を最大限活かすよう創意工夫に満ちていますが、その中でもこのブナコの技術は最も無駄がなくエコロジカルな技術であると言えるでしょう。無駄がないとは、材料に無駄が出ないこと、そして造形的に無駄がなくシンプルであるということです。無駄がない分 造形的にも簡素なものが多く、そして照明器具となれば薄く漏れる赤い光にはブナコでしか表現できない独特の魅力があり、それらが今の時代によく馴染んでいるように感じられます。歴史は浅くも、青森県が国内外に誇る現代の工芸品として着々と進化している技術です。

Cut a board of BUNA tree, the Beech tree, into a slice of wood, then roll it up like coil and form 3D products - This is the technique of BUNACO.
This BUNACO was originally developed for a base woodwork for Tsugaru-Nuri, the local Urushi lacquer ware in Tsugaru region in Aomori. However, as time went by, the original beauty of its unique pattern giving the impression of Tree's annual rings has been paid attention to then “without Urushi lacquer” became the products.
It is said that the BUNA tree has got promoted; it was only used for apple carton boxes before BUNACO, but now it comes in a fruit bowls on a table!
The BUNACO technique gave a new life for the BUNA beech tree.


There are many places throughout Japan dealing with wood products with it local techniques such as MAGE-KI or YOSE-GI, and each technique does the best to make the most of the material itself. Among those well-thought Japanese wooden products, BUNACO can be said the most ecological technique with the least waste given during its production from the material tree till the products.


Alongside its minimum waste produced, the product is generally simple in design. In case of lighting, BUNACO has quite unique characteristic; the light through BUNACO lampshade turns into a unique and warm red-ish light. This unique atmosphere can be expressed only by BUNACO, and this seems get along together with our current lifestyles.


Despite the relatively short history about 60years, BUNACO and its technique are surely one of Aomori’s proud of today for both inside and outside of Japan.
