Lacquer -wall for an event space-

Project: dunhill event space
Delivery: approx. two months (excluding construction)
Finish: acrylic black lacquer
This event space was designed by merging the esthetic of dunhill,
an English establishment Brand with the refinement of Japanese lacquer.
Urushi lacquer is a very luxurious finish for a temporary space,
but the creative team of dunhill felt that the texture and unique finish
they were looking for could only be achieved by using Urushi.
The beauty of which would draw peopleユs attention like a mysterious
black hole. The silver lines of the design add a modern touch to the surface.
This was the first time we had developed the Urushi technique for an interior
finish in a public space. The use of lacquerware was totally innovative and
challenged the limited perception of Urushi's use.
Period: Sep. 7th, 2005 - Sep. 20th, 2005
Venue: ISETAN department store, Shinjuku 1F Tokyo - The stage-

Lacquer -table with geometric designs-

Product: table top
Finish: hand-carved base with lacquer on top
Delivery: 3 months
Size: w800×d800×h25 mm(excluding table leg
Design: Intentionallies
The table, we used for the show in Milan, showed an amazing
possibilities of what we could create with urushi craftsmen.
When we first proposed the concept of the table to the craftsmen
they seemed a little confused with the design and not so confident
about its turnout. It was a completely new challenge for them.
Generally the motif used for carving is a representational picture.
It was the first time for them to see geometric patterns.
It seemed more practical to do it by machine, as there was a risk of
not being able to spread the urushi evenly.
But the craftsmen wanted to try this new design to achieve something
that the machine could not do. When the table was finished the craftsmen
were so happy with the result and the success of the new idea to use
their traditional technique.
Through the process of making this table we had the great experience of
working with skilled and talented craftsmen, combining our ideas with
their skill we created something incredibly beautiful.
Process -carved base plus lacquer-
*Drying time varies depending on weather.
1. The wood base with curving is prepared.
2. Ki-urushi (raw lacquer) is rubbed onto the surface.
(3 hours + drying for 48 hours)
3. Shita nuri (basecoat): mixture of ki-urushi and pine resin
is applied onto the surface using a brush. (4 hours + drying for 24 hours)
4. Shitanuri-togi (basecoat & scraping): a special charcoal and
waterproof paper are used to whet the surface with water carefully.
These processes are repeated twice. (3 hours)
5. Nakanuri: the second layer is painted evenly onto
a layered surface to prepare for the next layer.
(4 hours + drying for 24 hours)
6. Nakanuri-togi : after it has been dried, a whetstone
is used to whet the flat surface with water and charcoal
powder is used to whet the curved surfaces. (3 hours)
7. Uwanuri : uwanuri urushi is applied onto the whole surface.
(5 hours + drying for 72 hours)
8. It is completed once it has dried. Traditionally more polish
can be added with a fine whetting charcoal paper.

Lacquer -jewelry-

Project: lacquer jewelry
Technique: acrylic with black urushi lacquer finish
Delay: 4 weeks
Price: JPY15,750 (tax included)
Design: Masako BAN
This project started with the question by the jewlry designer;
"is it possible to apply lacquer on this ring?"
It was indeed a very first experience for us and craftsman to finish
jewelry with lacquer. It was a challenge for the craftsman, applying
lacquer onto such a small surface. The smaller the surface is,
the more difficult for craftsman to paint urushi since it shows dust
very easily and it is hard to express texture and color in such
a small space. After some trial and errors, the ring was created
in a harmony of acrylic and lacquer. The lacquered object becomes
more beautiful with time. We are very excited to see the future of
this piece as the first urushi jewelry.
